If you’ve ever wondered… “What’s the name of the pretty tree that turns so red in fall?” It’s an Autumn Blaze Maple. This hybrid of silver and red maple has experienced phenomenal popularity due to its ascending branch habit, rapid growth rate, drought tolerance when established, ability to grow in most soils, beautiful fall color and form. It was selected as the 1997 Iowa Tree of the year. 2004 Urban Tree of the year, Society of Municipal Arborists.

Even in winter, the look of the tree is wonderful. The ascending branches are placed evenly, and the overall profile is nicely symmetrical. It’s balanced, well-structured and even with a clean, oval outline.

Many city planners have included this tree in their planting plans. The trees are adaptable to urban settings.

This sturdy hybrid is very common in this region, often serving as a parkway or street tree. It has a brilliant, red-orange color in the fall. Freeman’s maple is a hybrid of the red maple and silver maple; the cross yields both the strong branch attachment of the red maple and fast growth rate of the silver maple. Freeman’s maple is also less susceptible to chlorosis symptoms than the red or silver maples.

‘Brandywine’ resulted from a 1982 cross of Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’ and A. rubrum ‘Autumn Flame’ by A. M. Townsend as part of a research project examining the inheritance of fall color and leafhopper resistance, and an effort to improve existing cultivars of red maple. It was released in December 1994.

Another factor to consider when finding the ideal space for a crimson king is the species’ notoriously shallow root system. The main roots tend to reside just below the soil surface, occasionally protruding here and there like sea serpents across your lawn. This can make mowing difficult, as the mower blades may damage the roots or vice versa. These structures can also pose a problem if the tree is planted too close to a road or walkway, actually overpowering the cement or asphalt and causing cracks and upswellings along the surface.

The Deborah Maple is a hardy, deciduous, tree with a broad crown and dense foliage. The leaves are wavy-margined, opening in brilliant red, turning dark green in summer, and becoming orange-yellow in the fall. It bears greenish-yellow flowers in early spring. Tolerant to poor soils and harsh environmental conditions, but should be grown where vigorous surface roots will not be a problem.

Deborah Norway Maple is a versatile tree that can be planted almost anywhere in the yard. Because of their large leaves, Norway Maples produce a very dense shade that can provide relief from the hot summer sun. This tree should be planted at least 15ft from buildings and is also a perfect choice for the parkway.
