Basic Info:

Throughout America, Accolade Elms are one of the most vigorously growing landscaping trees . They are a large-maturing hybrid with the classic, vase shape like the American Elm. But, they are much more compact in structure. When Dutch Elm Disease (DED) destroyed most of the elms lining American streets, it was feared that the American elm would never be replaced. As a result, this selection of landscaping trees were perfect because of their excellent DED and Elm Leaf Beetle resistance..

Preferences:

When planting, Accolade Elms like an average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. But, it is tolerant of light shade, and prefers rich, moist loams. They are adapting to both wet and dry sites. Therefore it is generally tolerant of urban conditions. Regular pruning and spraying is advisable.

In Depth:

Selected from the collections of the Morton Arboretum in Lisle Illinois. They have graceful, vase like American Elm shape, with dark green and glossy foliage. In addition, it has excellent disease and pest resistance, drought tolerance, and wonderful yellow fall color. There is a 20 year old Accolade Elm tree at the Morton Arboretum in Illinois. It is 60′ in height with approximately a 40′ spread and is known for its beautiful fall color. It is perfect for streets and pathways, although, it can be used as a shade tree.

Ulmus ‘Morton’ (selling name Accolade) is an elm cloned from a hybrid planted at the Morton Arboretum in 1924. But, it originated as seed collected from a tree at the Arnold Arboretum in Massachusetts. This tree was originally identified as a Cedar Elm. However, it is now believed to have been a hybrid of the Japanese Elm and Wilson’s Elm.

Expedition Elm

Prairie Expedition American Elm, a cultivar of our native Ulmus americana, is a clonal propagation of a lone survivor found among many other American elms that died from Dutch Elm Disease. Like other American elms, its mature height is around 60′ with a spread of 35-40′, and it has the classic cathedral/umbrella form that makes them so desirable. It tolerates most soil types, a wide range of pH, compacted soils, environmental salt, and general urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for urban sites where larger trees are desired (parks, boulevards without powerlines, and other open spaces).

The original Prairie Expedition tree was found alive among many other dead elms along the Wild Rice River, near Fargo, ND. It was propagated at NDSU and found to have excellent resistance to the DED fungus. In studies comparing several DED resistant cultivars, researchers at the University of Minnesota also found that it had especially excellent disease resisting properties. It was released in 2004 and named in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition. The original tree pictured below has two leaders, making it wider than it would be when properly pruned.

Princeton Elm

With renewed interest in planting elms the ‘Princeton Elm’ is an ideal choice. Proven highly resistant to Dutch elm disease. Fast growing, graceful, symmetrical branching. Adaptable to extremes in pH, moisture, heat and wind. Own root.

The magnificent Princeton, Ulmus Americana ‘Princeton’ is the ideal tree to plant where large soil volume and above ground space is available. This is a true American elm, not a hybrid, but selected from a specimen around 1922 and developed by Princeton Nurseries. It has a proven record of Dutch elm resistance and longevity on the street. Ironically, the Dutch Elm Disease that decimated most elm trees in the US was not introduced into the US until about 10 years later, and Princeton elm trees planted before this time are still around today. This selection is also resistant to the elm leaf beetle but may be susceptible to phloem necrosis and wet wood.

This large, fast-growing tree is tolerant of many adverse site conditions. This plant is a cultivar of a species that is native to the Chicago region according to Swink and Wilhelm’s Plants of the Chicago Region, with updates made according to current research. Cultivars are plants produced in cultivation by selective breeding or via vegetative propagation from wild plants identified to have desirable traits.
